President Muhammadu Buhari said on Thursday that he would sustain the change mantra to correct the systemic distortion of past administrations if re-elected in the February 1019 presidential election.
The President said this during the inauguration of the Women and Youth Presidential Campaign Team at the State House in Abuja.
“In carrying out this assignment, I expect from members of this team the same loyalty and support which you exhibited in 2015. Let us remind Nigerians about our plans, our good work and achievements.
“Tell the people why they should give us another four years. Our dream is to sustain change so that all systemic distortions can be corrected and we can enjoy the fruits of being Nigerians under the banner of freedom. It is also our hope that our unborn children will inherit a better nation,” he said.
While stressing the critical role of women and youth in the campaign as direct and indirect beneficiaries of the social investment programmes, the President urged members of the team to reach out to all Nigerians, door-to-door, and remind them why the ruling party needs another four years.
The President said the gathering reminded him of his political struggles over the years and the support he enjoyed from Nigerians.
“My association with you has been for very long and is characterized by loyalty to the cause of change. I am happy to tell you that we have made numerous landmark achievements and the change remains unshaken and continues until we return Nigeria on track to assume its rightful place among the comity of nations.
“The Women and Youth Presidential Campaign Team being inaugurated today was constituted to support the Presidential Campaign Council which I chair. This shows the importance with which we view the role of women and youths as the backbone of the Nigerian electorate. As such, they should be the drivers of our campaign, more so, they are the major direct and indirect beneficiaries of our social investment programmes,” he said.
In his remarks, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Buhari Support Organisation (BSO), Mr. Hammed Ali, said Nigeria was too great and important to be left in the hands of selfish people.
He said the President had the option to sit back and tend to his garden in Daura or Kaduna but because of his love for the nation, he decided to rescue the country.
Also speaking, the Director General of the campaign organisation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, said in the past, elections used to be a period of bizarre for people to share money.
“Our message is that this president has done so much with so little. It would have even worse if he did not come on board. If they tell you there is hunger, tell them it could have been worse if the President was not in power.
“Tell them of the looted treasury, tell then if the poor infrastructure before our president came on board. This is our message from door to door and city to city. We are all working together, there is no conflict of interest, our purpose is to ensure our principal crosses the line come February 16, 2019.”
