The Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, has sent the name of Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen, to the Senate for confirmation as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The Presidency made the nomination known via its Twitter handle @NGRPresident on Wednesday.
Justice Onnoghen has acted in that capacity since November 10, 2016 when President Muhammadu Buhari swore him in to replace Justice Mahmud Mohammed who retired at the mandatory age of 70.
The National Judicial Council had earlier forwarded Onnoghen’s name to the President to be named the new CJN based on the recommendation of the Federal Judicial Service Commission.
The President however chose to appoint him in acting capacity for a period of three months which elapses on February 10.
Justice Onnogen, 67, has served at the apex court for 12 years, having been elevated in 2005.
Born on the 22nd December, 1950 at Okurike Town, Biase L.G.A. of Cross Rivers State, Justice Onnogen, if confirmed by the Senate, will cease to be CJN on the 22nd December, 2020 when he turns 70.
