The National Assembly has resolved to invite President Muhammadu Buhari to address a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives on the current status of the nation’s economy.
The House of Representatives had on September 22, 2016 constituted an adhoc committee to liaise with the Senate, with a view to inviting the President to address the lawmakers on his plans to get the country out of recession.
The House took the decision following a motion by a member, Olayiwola Kazzim (All Progressives Congress/Ogun State) and entitled, ‘Urgent need to address the economic downturn in Nigeria.’
The lawmakers had agreed on the need for the President to address the National Assembly on the country’s economic downturn.
The Senate concurred with the Lower Chamber during plenary on Thursday.
“That the Senate do (sic) concur with the House of Representatives’ resolution passed on Thursday, 22nd of September, 2016, to wit: to invite the President and Commander-in-Chief to address a joint session of the National Assembly to intimate it on plans to get the country out of the recession to enable the House to take further legislative action,” the motion read.
When Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki took the vote, the Senators voted overwhelmingly in favour of the motion.
The National Assembly is expected to officially inform the Presidency about the resolution.
