Wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Muhammadu Buhari has flagged off a week long event to mark the first maternal child week in Kebbi state and commissioned Birnin Yari Primary Healthcare Centre and Jega General Hospital which was named after her.
Speaking at the ceremony on Thursday in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, Mrs Buhari calked on wives of governors if the 36 states of the federation to assist in the reduction of maternal and infant mortality rates.
She said wives of the governors were in a vintage position to influence change in the health sector in their respective states, particularly that of women and children.
She said children and women’s education is key to understanding the dynamics of their health status and a veritable means of enhancing their lives and ultimately the society at large.
The Wife of the president commended the initiative of the wife of Kebbi State Governor, Mrs Zainab Bagudu, and expressed determination to continue the crusade for improved health care for women and children.
“Every mother should take advantage of the available health centers to seek for medical advise to guard agains early death of women and children,” she said.
She also acknowledged the steadfastness and enthusiasm shown by the development partners to make their inputs in the rebirth of the health sector.
In her remarks, Mrs Zainab Bagudu said the health of women and children is of utmost concern state government, hence the initiative to reduce maternal and child mortality.
In their separate speeches, representatives of stakeholders such as World Bank, UNICEF, and John Hopkins commended wife of the state governor for the initiative and pledged their support to such health reforms for the benefit of the populace, especially the rural inhabitants.
They also called for the engagement of adequate manpower to maintain the facility to live up to the demands of the beneficiaries.
