The wife of the President, Hajiya Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, said on Thursday that there’s the urgent need to allow more women participate in politics in the 2019 general elections to enable contribute to the socio-economic development of the country and its people.
Mrs Buhari said this while declaring open the Women Political Aspirants Advocacy Summit in Abuja jointly organised by the National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), National Council for Women Societies, Women in Politics Forum and the Office of the Wife of the President.
She declared her support for female candidates vying for different elective positions irrespective of their political parties in the country, saying this was necessary considering the low level of women participation in politics, especially at the grassroots level.
The summit was organised by the National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), National Council for Women Societies and Women in Politics Forum in Collaboration with the Office of the Wife of the President.
She called on women not to be discouraged and aspire for different political offices in order to have a say in the decision-making bodies in the country.
She said voting for women would guarantee access to clean drinking water, hygiene and improved maternal and child health.
According to her, election of women into political offices is achievable because women make up the larger body of voters, and can determine the fate of any election.
