While the world was jubilating over the coming of the New Year, the Mafoluku area of Oshodi in Lagos state found nothing to rejoice over as a teenage student committed suicide on Sunday.
Verishima Unokyur, 19, lived with his brother and mum and was a 200 level student of Social Work at Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, before his death.
It was learnt that the deceased sent a New Year text message to his best friend and ended it with“See you in heaven,” before taking his own life.
He reportedly hung himself with his own tie while his brother, Asor, fell asleep.
Sources close to the family said the boy had repeatedly told the mum, who works at Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), that he would die soon, prompting the woman to take him to different prayer houses for deliverance.
The mother was said to be a widow who took over the welfare of the children since her husband’s death.
Verishima was described by his teachers in school as an easy-going introvert.
