Some senators of the Federal of Nigeria have condemned the arrest and detention of some judges by the Department of State Services.
Operatives of the DSS had on Friday night arrested some Supreme, Appeal and High Court judges in parts of the country.
The Service accused the judges of corruption and said some huge amount of cash was recovered from each of them.
While some lawyers had condemned the DSS action, others said everything must be done to stamp out corruption in the judiciary.
When the matter came up at Senate plenary on Tuesday, it was sent to the Standing Committee on Judiciary and Legal Matters.
The committee was mandated to review the existing laws on security and anti-corruption agencies and get back to the House in four weeks time.
The resolution adopted a motion on a matter of urgent national importance moved by Senator Joshua Lidani (PDP, Gombe).
Other Senators, who spoke in support of the motion, acknowledged the need to purge the judicial arm of government of corruption, even as they criticized the DSS for allegedly acting outside its constitutional powers.
Senator Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi) and Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi (APC, Kaduna) described the DSS action against the judges as a “misnomer” and illegal.
Chairman, Senate Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes, Senator Chukwuka Utazi (PDP, Enugu), said the development was “uncalled for”.
Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah, reiterated that the Upper Chamber was “irrevocably” committed to anti-corruption fight of the government, noting that if the action of the DSS was in compliance with the laws of the land, it would not have generated the aftermath outcry.
Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, also said the Senate was in total support of the anti-corruption war.
He however stressed that it must be fought within the confines of the laws.
