[T]he federal government said on Tuesday that it was considering the establishment of a commercial unit in its Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
This was disclosed by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita.
Mrs Oyo-Ita, who disclosed this when she received the report of an 8-man Technical Committee on Enterprise Culture and Commercial Orientation in the Federal Civil Service in Abuja, said the units would be established in order to introduce enterprise culture and commercial orientation in the service.
She said the target was to move the civil service from a cost-centre to a revenue-generating organ where the potentials of all revenue outfits in the Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the federal government are fully utilized.
She said government was working to reposition the service to be more efficient, productive, incorruptible and citizen-centred.
She assured that the recommendations and modalities that are worked out for the smooth take off of the commercial units would be given due attention, adding that the units would not only generate revenue for government but would also provide opportunity for career progression in the civil service.
In her remarks, chairman of the 8-man Technical Committee and Permanent Secretary, Service Policy and Strategy Office in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Hajiya Nuratu Batagarawa, said the committee adopted global approach and best practices in arriving at its recommendations.
