Nigerian representative, Enyimba Football Club of Aba has qualified for the lucrative group stage of the CAF Champions League.
Enyimba goal keeper, Theophilus Afelokhai was the hero on Wednesday’s night in the second leg game played in Sousse, Tunisia as he stopped four penalties to earn his team a befitting 7-6 win over hosts, Etoile du Sahel. The match ended 3-0 in regulation time in favour of Etoile du Sahel who had lost the first leg by the same margin.
The resultant penalty shoot-out saw the Nigerian champions’ goalkeeper, Afelokhai saving four penalties. Defending champions, TP Mazembe were dumped out of the competition after a 3-1 aggregate loss to Wydad Casablanca. The Moroccans, coached by former Real Madrid boss John Toshack, scored late in DR Congo to earn a 1-1 draw.
Mazembe had taken the lead after 28 minutes as Mali defender Salif Coulibaly headed home a corner from Ghana’s Solomon Asante. Reda Hajhouj equalised in injury time. The draw for the group stage will be held on 24 May in Cairo, Egypt.
