There are strong indications that the immediate past Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Sullivan Chime, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Chime told journalists in Enugu on Friday that as far as he was concerned, PDP was no longer in existence, wondering why the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, was yet to deregister it.
Chime said, however, that he had yet to join another political party, saying he was still consulting.
He denied quitting the PDP because of his case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The former governor had been linked to the N23bn campaign fund money involving former Petroleum Resources minister, Mrs Dieziani Alison-Madueke.
“The PDP, we used to be members of, is dead. The party I joined in 1999 and had the opportunity of leading in the state for eight years is no longer in existence.
“We have two groups claiming to be in charge of the party as chairman. These two, none of them can actually lay claim to the chairmanship of the party.
“There is no provision in PDP’s Constitution for interim caretaker committee led by Sen. Ahmed Makarfi,” he stated.
The former governor explained that Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff on his own was brought in to serve out the tenure of former PDP National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu, adding that the tenure had long elapsed.
Some notable politicians in Enugu State, including a former Senate President, Chief Ken Nnamani and Chief Jim Nwobodo, a former senator had since dumped the PDP for the APC.
The talk of Chime joining the ruling party gained traction on Thursday when the spokesman of the APC in the South-East, Hyacinth Ngwu, in a post on his Facebook page said: “Breaking News: Today, His Excellency Barr. Sullivan Iheanacho Chime, immediate past governor of Enugu State, joins APC.”
