German tennis star, Angelique Kerber, has displaced her American counterpart, Serena Williams, at the top of the WTA rankings released on Monday.

Kerber earned her new status with strong performances in the just concluded Madrid Open.

She made it to the third round where she faced Eugenie Bouchard and retired with a lower back injury trailing 6-3, 5-0.

Serena was beaten to second on the new table while her big sister, Venus Williams, is in 12th position.
