The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, has described the disobedience of court orders as a threat to the independence of the judiciary.

Fielding questions from Senators during his screening for confirmation as the substantive CJN on Wednesday, Onnogen said the duty of the bench is to issue court orders, urging the lawmakers and the executive to take the matter up with seriousness.

The present administration has been said to often disobey court orders especially in the cases involving Biafra agitator, Nnamdi Kanu, and former National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd).

The government has consistently disobeyed court orders calling for their release on bail

“If rulings are not respected, they would just be “mere piece of paper.”

“Anyway, disobedience of court order is an act of impunity. But excuse me from further comments,” the CJN said.
