Britain’s oldest footballer, 81-year-old Dickie Borthwick, has made an appeal for a club to sign him up after failing to find a team to play for.

Sprightly Dickie has been sidelined as he is now too old for veterans football which is mostly played by men aged in their late 30s and 40s today and is becoming ever more competitive.

He has been invited to join a walking football team – a new slow-paced version of the game aimed at senior citizens – but maintains he can still run for 90 minutes and isn’t willing to hang up his boots just yet.

Dickie has played parks football every season since 1948 but his team for the last 40 years, Wyke Rangers veterans in Dorset, has folded and he is now limited to appearances in charity matches.

He said ideally he would like to play friendly matches once every two weeks against more senior players.
