Colombian President, Juan Manual Santos, has been announced winner of the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for 2016.

This announcement was made by the head of the selection committee, Kaci Kullman Five, in Norway on Friday.

Santos was picked out of 360 nominees.

He was recognized for his historic attempt to end the 52-year-old violent conflict between the Colombian government and FARC rebels.

The proposed peace deal with the rebels could not however yield immediate result as majority of Colombian voters rejected it in a referendum conducted last week.

The Columbian leader pressed for a Yes vote in the referendum after four years of intense negotiations with the FARC fighters.

Santos, who watched the results come in at the presidential palace in Bogotá, said negotiations will continue, adding that he wont give up the battle to ensure peace.
